Approximately 31 percent of Indian consumers cite the desire to upgrade to the latest technology as the primary reason for their smartphone purchases. A recent report reveals that around 42 percent of Indians plan to invest in premium smartphones (priced at Rs 30,000 and above) during the festive season, with a strong focus on 5G capability, the latest processors, and ample RAM as key specifications. According to Counterpoint Research, when it comes to shopping channels, as many as 86 percent are considering online platforms, with Amazon being the most favored.

Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and OnePlus have emerged as the preferred smartphone brands for this festive season. Consumers are increasingly discerning about smartphone quality and features, prompting them to consult multiple sources before making a purchase decision. The trend leans toward premium smartphones, indicating a shift in consumer preferences, says senior analyst Arushi Chawla.

Samsung leads as the top preferred smartphone brand with 33 percent of respondents favoring it, followed by Apple at 18 percent, Xiaomi at 11 percent, and OnePlus at 10 percent. Amazon's appeal lies in attractive offers, the availability of top brands, access to the latest devices, fast delivery, and reliability, according to the report.

The presence of 5G technology in lower-priced smartphone segments (Rs 10,000 and below) is expected to drive smartphone demand in the coming years. Additionally, 20 percent of respondents are considering a shift from offline to online platforms, with the primary reason cited by 43 percent of this segment being the availability of the latest devices, notes Research Director Tarun Pathak.

Furthermore, the report highlights that 22 percent of respondents prioritize cashbacks and rewards as their preferred offer when purchasing smartphones, followed by bank offers at 21 percent and no-cost EMIs at 16 percent.
